Spaces for Peoples Actively and Critically Engaging in Education (SPACEE) is a project focused on establishing a student housing cooperative that addresses food and housing insecurity in Merced, CA through an education justice lens. SPACEE’s community will comprise of queer students of color, those without legal status, those from low-income communities, and first-generation students. Through a self-governing housing structure, the housing cooperative will link institutional support to housing efforts to support retention efforts for the most disadvantaged students in the Merced community in order to support the completion of their higher education degree. UC Merced is expected to double its size in the coming years due to the school’s “2020 Project,” an aggressive expansion project approved in Fall 2016.
