Education Justice

The Magic City Youth Initiative is an organic, grassroots, youth-led initiative that aims to (1) create space for young people to connect, build community, have fun, and share ideas; (2) identify challenges facing young people in Birmingham; (3) educate, engage, and mobilize young people around local environmental and social justice issues; and (4) start building a youth agenda that addresses these challenges. The leadership team of MCYI became established after an eight-month-long process of planning and hosting the Magic City Youth Assembly, the very first Youth Movement Assembly held in Birmingham. The Magic City Youth Assembly created an open space for an intergenerational group of 50 people between the ages of 17 and 60 to converge, discuss challenges facing their communities, and collectively imagine solutions to these challenges that can lead to a better Birmingham for everyone.
