Nyah Macklin

Education Justice

2018

How do we increase the number of Black and Latinx students from New Haven public schools applying to 4-year universities? Macklin would like to address this issue by addressing the few numbers of college counselors in New Haven public schools. We also need to recognize that a majority of New Haven public school students are first-generation college students and so have not had a parent or direct family member who has attended college, and most likely, have gone through the college admissions process. A college counseling program that increases the number of college counselors in New Haven Public Schools could help to remedy this equity in education issues. This proposal will be the first year of a 5 year plan to get a program like College Advising Corps in place to serve New Haven Public School students.
