The Social Justice Sewing Academy is a critical education program that fosters participatory art as a vehicle for personal transformation, community cohesion, and social change. We bring together artist-mentors, local youth, and community members to learn and experiment through place-based projects. Programming delivers a social justice-based educational curriculum while creating activists and inspiring agents of change. Although youth participants in SJSA workshops and summer programs may have never worked with fabric before, we use sewing as the medium to amplify their artistic voices to share their stories. Our programming pieces together youth voice, textile art with community in a 21st Century sewing circle. Specifically, we provide 90 minute ‘make-a-block’ workshops at high schools, create social justice art exhibits, and have week-long programming comprised of social justice education and sewing instruct.
