When It Comes to Facebook Relationships, “It’s (Politically) Complicated”

My Facebook engagement lasted less than 24 hours.

I was one of the many whom, during the social networking website’s early development when two profiles first began to link to one another through a declaration of a relationship status, light-heartedly proposed an “engagement” to a female friend from high school.

As a new student at college where not everyone I knew was familiar with the nature of my relationship to my freshly declared “fiancé” and perhaps because these “comical
engagements” were not quite as rampant as they currently are, my relationship status caused confusion. I received several inquiries about “the lucky lady” as well as a sweet but misguided congratulatory email for my impending nuptials.

Facebook status: Expelled

Inside Higher Ed has an interesting story about a college activist who was expelled over a facebook collage.

T. Hayden Barnes opposed his university’s plan to build two large parking garages with $30 million from students’ mandatory fees. So last spring, he did what any student activist would do: He posted fliers criticizing the plan, wrote mass e-mails to students, sent letters to administrators and wrote a letter to the editor of the campus newspaper. While that kind of campaign might be enough to annoy university officials, Barnes never thought it would get him expelled.

An Activist Says Hello

Hi, this is my first entry at Young People For. I've known about the organization for years, but not much about it beyond the basics, like they're affiliated with PFAW, youth-focused and put on good training programs. I'm a recent graduate of UC Santa Barbara and proud progressive activist and writer.

With my first post, I want to tell you about a project I'm involved in and ask for your help.

It's called Lose the Label. It's a new social networking website that was born on an old social networking website; it was created by young progressives for young progressives.
