Your Campus Through Conservative-Tinted Glasses
September has been a busy time for young conservative leaders across American campuses. More onslaughts onto the freedoms of college students have been launched in hopes to turn more campuses in a pivotal election year more conservative. Several YP4 bloggers are documenting the damage:
McCain's VP Selection: Strategic or Tragic?
One of my fellow YP4 Leadership Academy participants and myself attended the debate watch party last night hosted by San Francisco for Obama.
Obama's Pragmatism and White Flight
These two articles I read over the weekend together give a great summary explanation on Obama's position in the presidential race and the reality surrounding his supporters jumping ship into Republican waters.
Militarized Campuses: a Bipartisan Affair
Last week, Barack Obama confirmed what many had hoped was a misstatement made in the primaries. Washington Post:
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took the occasion to chide Columbia for its lack of on-campus ROTC. "I don't think that's right," Mr. McCain said. "Shouldn't the students here be exposed to the attractiveness of serving in the military, particularly as an officer?" Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) readily agreed, calling Columbia's anti-ROTC stance a "mistake."
Flash back several months (courtesy For Student Power):
From last night's Democratic debate, as reported by The Hill:
Obama and Edwards both said that they supported withholding funding from higher education institutions that do not provide ROTC programs to students. Clinton initially said she would enforce laws to stop funding but later said of prominent schools that do not have ROTC programs that "there are ways they can work out fulfilling that obligation."
What they were talking about is the Solomon Amendment — a law passed in 1996 (and upheld unanimously by the Supreme Court) that allows the Secretary of Defense to strip a college or university of all Federal funding if the school bans/prohibits ROTC or any other military recruitment on campus.
Palin for President?: A Shift in Focus
It seems as though every news source I turn to, from CNN at the gym to the New York Times webpage that's set as my homepage, there's Palin. I receive at least over a dozen emails about Palin daily. Is it just me? When's the last time you received an email, read an article, or watched headline news that was about McCain without any mention of Palin?
The Onion: Portrayal Of Obama As Elitist Hailed As Step Forward For African Americans
Hurricane Gustav: When Mother Nature Gets Political
I spent Labor Day weekend in Miami, and while Hurricane Gustav was not scheduled to make an official, direct appearance at my location, I could certainly feel its effects. As one who grew up in with earthquakes, I was not accustomed to joint efforts of the elements of wind and water teaming up to change the landscape of a city.
For the election wonks who love numbers.
FiveThirtyEight is a nifty little website that displays electoral projections in — what else? — snazzy red and blue. There's an electoral vote tracker, a scenario analysis rundown and more.
The website's mission is defined thusly: "Most broadly, to accumulate and analyze polling and political data in way that is informed, accurate and attractive. Most narrowly, to give you the best possible objective assessment of the likely outcome of upcoming elections."
I've only recently started looking through it, but I recommend reading more about their process.
Anti-Obama Books: Please Check your Facts
In the middle of conducting research on the rates of uninsured Asian Americans in the U.S. and specifically in California, I came across a publication from what I originally thought to be a credible source. However, as soon as I read that Asian Americans in Alameda County had a 100% rate of being insured, I was forced to reconsider the latter. I wonder how many people who come across this publication will actually believe, and worse, use this data, to argue that Asian Americans have perfect health. Imagine the negative implications of such data as Asian American health issues, including disparities in rates of breast cancer, low birthweight, and yes, health insurance (contrary to the publication noted earlier) continue to go unchecked.
Batman and the Progressive Movement: The Dark Knight among Us
Eversince I saw "Batman Begins," Batman became my favorite superhero. I was initially drawn to his ability to draw strength from past hurts and persistence in overcoming weaknesses/fears. While I am not one to tolerate violence, I also appreciated Batman's vigilante role as he committed both an exhorbant amount of time and resources to protecting the people of Gotham; a slightly more extreme version of Bill Gates.
So how does Batman relate to the Progressive Movement, or better yet, the Obama's campaign and the current U.S. Presidential Elections?
