Countering the Logic of “Illegal Immigrants”

Mary’s Blueprint addressed the civil rights and labor rights violations that undocumented immigrants face, the ways in which immigrant communities are policed by law enforcement and border patrol, and the lack of knowledge about the immigration system that legitimates current treatment of illegal immigrants as part of the underclass in America. She worked to create a student organization that played a key role in forming a statewide network for immigrant rights advocates. By serving immigrant communities, educating students, and organizing with immigrants in Michigan, it sought to build power for undocumented immigrants and strengthen the ties between college students and the surrounding communities. Through this work, she helped unify previously disconnected groups by fighting for just immigration reform and better protection of immigrant rights.
