Colleen is working on healthy food access and affordability in Richmond. Limited access to healthy food is associated with a host of health problems, including obesity. But the problem of food deserts, particularly in Richmond, goes beyond the lack of a full-service, affordable grocery store in low-income communities. There is a critical gap in awareness of health and nutrition, the food cycle, the U.S. food industry, food preparation, and eating on budget. Colleens Blueprint works toward a community in which the strategic growth and expansion of school and community garden projects provides food deserts throughout Richmond with healthy food access and teach community members about food systems, health and nutrition. She is also working to ensure there is youth involvement in these initiatives, empowering young people to shift the culture surrounding food and play a high-impact role in the sustainable development of their healthy community.
