Investing in Culturally Relevant History

Jessica’s Blueprint addressed the issue of marginalization of communities of color within our education system, particularly Latin@ and the African-American communities and the inaccurate portrayal of those communities histories through mainstream education. This Blueprint sought to counter the self-hatred and skewed perceptions of history and of self caused by the lack of self-advocacy and minority student disinterest in core subjects because the course materials fail to incorporate their history. Her Blueprint advocated for an integration of culturally relevant history and countered the reproduction of text books that constantly watered-down people of color’s history, thus helping minority students reinvest in their own true history.
