Matt Yagyagan has served as the Special Projects Organizer for Alliance of San Diego, where he worked in K-12 education policy and advocacy, trains parents from low-income communities to be leaders in education, and mobilized stakeholders to act on statewide legislation. In 2010, Matt was an OCA Summer Intern placed in the office of Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. He was also a facilitator for OCA‘s Asian Pacific American (APA) Y-Advocate Program. Matt graduated early from the University of California, Berkeley in 2010 and holds B.A.s in Political Science and Ethnic Studies. During his time at Cal, he organized thousands of students in 2009 against the budget cuts and tuition hikes that plagued public education across California, mobilized 2010 Census participation in low-income communities and communities of color in Oakland, CA, and developed partnerships between the UC Berkeley Multicultural Center and the Bay Area community. In high school, Matt helped draft a 2006 city council proclamation that recognized the significant contributions made by Pilipino and Pilipino Americans in Chula Vista, CA. Matt was a 2011 Fellow in People for the American Way’s prestigious Front Line Leaders Academy and a 2014 Fellow with the San Diego Leadership Alliance. He has also served on the San Diego AAPI Democratic Club Executive Board, and the Center on Policy Initiatives Students for Economic Justice Advisory Board. Further, he is passionate about progressive values, educational equity, electoral politics, and civic engagement in the AAPI community.
